Sleep Center for Children

Sleep Program and Sleep Laboratory

The Sleep Program for Children at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children treats children with any problems occurring during or related to sleep. Children with suspected sleep-related breathing or behavioral disorders such as:

  • snoring,
  • obstructive sleep apnea,
  • upper airway resistance syndrome,
  • insomnia,
  • narcolepsy,
  • restless leg syndrome,
  • behavioral or school performance problems,
  • ADD/ADHD, or
  • suspected seizures

may be evaluated in the Sleep Program by a pediatric sleep specialist who is also a trained pediatric neurologist or a pediatric pulmonologist.

The Sleep Laboratory for Children at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children services the Sleep Program and the community of physicians whose patients suffer from various sleep-related disorders by performing pediatric sleep studies. By tailoring specifically to children and to medically complex children, the Sleep Laboratory for Children at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children sets itself aside from other sleep labs in the area, which are not set up for children or complex patients. Further, the Sleep Lab and the Sleep Program are linked so that each child with a suspected sleep-related disorder is first evaluated by a sleep specialist who orders the most appropriate course of treatment and sleep study if necessary.

The Sleep Program and Laboratory are jointly run by the Sections of Pulmonology and Neurology.  If a child has a breathing problem or a suspected seizure during sleep, underlying asthma or developmental delay, the child can be cared for by the Sleep Team. The Sleep Program, also supported by respiratory care and a pediatric nurse practitioner, adds respiratory and behavioral expertise to patient care.
