Hematology Program

St. Christopher’s is designated by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services as a regional leader in specialty care for newborns and children with hemophilia or hemoglobinopathies in the eastern half of Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey. St. Christopher’s also cares for children with other common or rare blood disorders of red blood cells, platelets, clotting factors or white blood cells.

The Hematology Program provides children with medical care, psychological and social services through the Marian Anderson Sickle Cell Care and Research Center. The Center provides acute care, routine follow-up care, genetic counseling, patient and family education and counseling, and school and vocational assistance for children of all ages with sickle cell disease. The Center is one of only 10 sickle cell centers in the country funded by the National Institutes of Health for its recognized excellence in patient care and research.

Researchers at the Center are testing new medications and treatments for sickle cell pain and are sponsoring numerous research programs to develop a better understanding of this complex disease. New programs are also being developed to help patients reach their fullest potential as individuals, and to support the special needs of families with infants with sickle cell disease.
