The Audiology Department provides comprehensive diagnostic and rehabilitative audiology (hearing) services for newborns, infants, children and adolescents.
Audiology services include assessment procedures for children from birth to 21 years of age. Various testing methods include visual reinforcement audiometry, conditioned play audiometry and conventional audiometry tests, which are chosen based on the developmental age and abilities of the child. Additional services include central auditory processing testing, brainstem auditory evoked response testing, otoacoustic emissions, hearing aid management and an infant hearing screening program. The audiologists also coordinate and consult with the child’s classroom teacher and hearing therapist as needed.
Most children are seen on an outpatient basis, many in conjunction with a visit to the Section of Otolaryngology. Reports and recommendations are forwarded to the referring physician. Inpatients can be evaluated in the department or at bedside, if necessary.
