Construction Progesses on Philadelphia’s Newest Ronald McDonald House

September 22, 2007

Construction has begun on a new “home away from home” for families of seriously ill children. Philadelphia’s newest Ronald McDonald House at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, located on Erie Avenue in front of the hospital’s main campus, will provide a haven for families of children being treated at area hospitals such as St. Christopher’s, Temple University Children’s Medical Center and Philadelphia Shriners Hospital.

The new facility will follow the model of the very first Ronald McDonald House, which was established in Philadelphia in 1974 and has inspired hundreds of Ronald McDonald Houses that have helped more than 10 million families around the world. Today, there are more than 286 Ronald McDonald Houses located in 25 countries.

The Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) grants approximately $500,000 per year to support nonprofit programs that directly improve the health and well being of children. Ronald McDonald Houses provide lodging, comfort and support to families who travel 25 miles or more for medical treatment. Although families are asked to pay a nominal fee, no family is ever turned away due to an inability to pay. RMHC of the Philadelphia Region, which receives funds from McDonald’s Corporation, McDonald’s owner/operators, corporate donors and McDonald’s customers, supports the Philadelphia, Southern New Jersey and Delaware Ronald McDonald Houses.

St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children is a 170-bed pediatric hospital located at Erie Avenue at Front Street in Philadelphia, PA that has an academic affiliation with Drexel University College of Medicine. The hospital provides a wide range of pediatric medical and surgical specialties. With a medical staff of more than 270 pediatric specialists, St. Christopher's is a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center and provides programs such as kidney transplantation, cancer treatment, burn and wound care, minimally invasive surgery, and open heart surgery for the children of the greater Philadelphia area and from around the world. The hospital is fully accredited by the Joint Commission, the nation’s oldest and largest hospital accreditation agency.
